Mr Birling: (to Inspector) Wait, What's your name.
Inspector: Rhuel spelt R-H-U-E-L
Inspector: (knocking) Mr Birling, May I come in?
Mr Birling: (carefully to Edna) See what he wants, but don't let him - I repeat don't - (to inspector) Inspector, would you mind if I talked to you and Goole outside please
Inspector: Sure.
They both walk out together leaving the three Birlings behind, Eric half conscious, Shiela looking intently behind at the Inspector and her father. Mrs Birling outraged yet anxious looking at Sheila to Gerald and Eric, Inspector Rhuel and Mr Birling. Mr Birling and Inspector opeing the door to meet the calm posture of the prevous Inspector. And Inspector Goole raising a hand to greet Ruel
Inspector: Hi Mr Goole, I was just heading off, amazing investigation (pating Goole on the shoulders) You beat us to it.
Mr Goole: Indeed Inspector, yet the message hasn't yet sunk in, how about Mr Birling comes with us and witness himself the catastrophe that we've witnessed (nodding to Inspector Ruel) Whilst it may seem extremely unneccessary, is a requirement to show Mr Birling of the part he played and how it affected young Smith.
Mr Birling: (nervous chucle) I don't think that's necessary.
Mr Goole: Your actions were unnecessary and you have not directly but more than influenced the death and disappearance of the young woman Eva Smith, you see Mr Birling, as I have told you a million times before, we are all member of one body, and unless we are taught the error of our ways and see our dark side, then unfortunately we may end up like young Henry Jekyll.
Mr Birling: Who's he?
Inspector Rhuel: I think what Mr Goole is trying to say is be responsible for your actions, and as it says here, here you weren't always upper class Mr Birling, surely you must have known what it felt like.
Mr Birling: (looking worried) No not him
Inspector Goole: (looking behind) I'm guessing that's the Cheif Constable, he plays golf with you eh? Old friend of yours um?
Mr Birling: (trying to threathen) Look here, I have almost had sick of your nonsen - ..
Inspector Rhuel: Enough, Don't make this any worse.
Cheif Constable approching them. He was quite heavy looking, with a french looking moustache and a posture which would allow anyone to be comfitable in any situation - with his presence.
Mr Birling: (as Cheif approaches him) I can explain.
Inspector Rhuel: Allow me, the Birling's have confessed to the current girl's condition.
Cheif Constable: (Sternly) Is this true, Mr Birling
//The curtain falls yet still the same scene contining from within the fake luxury of the Birlings house//
Mrs Birling: (looking at Sheila) Really Sheila, your behaivor ever since the inspector entered has been quite childish, you should have kept your words in.
Gerald: Please Mrs Birling: If there is a death as we clearly have heard, then isn't Sheila excused.
Mrs Birling: Yes, well all right, although I'm disgusted of your connection to this girl.
Sheila: (bored) Yes we've heard you gone on about girls of that class, but her thoughts and feelings rival those of a fully functional human being. Why do you think she well - did that. She has the scruples and fine feelings - you have so confidently denied
Gerald: Mrs Birling, please, hear me out, it wasn't disgusting - although was wrong, she had an air of kindness, and passion, which I greatly admired, and well I'm sorry but - I consider her a good person.
Sheila: Well said Gerald, you technically didn't do anything seriously wrong, so I respect that.
Gerald: Thank you
Mrs Birling: Gross impertinence, you had an affair Mr Croft, did you not.
Gerald: Yes
Mrs Birling: Hmm no sense of self control.
Sheila: Please Mother, it's okay realising it's wrong but a different thing to start discriminating Eva and Gerald
Mrs Birling: Eric! Sleep now.
Eric startled
