Up at the crack of dawn and I don't know how
Its early in the morning but I'm still too late for chow
Now
Its time for another mundane day
Quick hop off of my cot past my celly while he's busy sleeping, seeping snot
I leave that rectangular prism and venture out into my open air prison
And make a mental tally mark to mark another 24 hrs of living
Through this life sentence I was given
And the group around Jeremy Pivon
Pivots around me, annually
And you know we
Are all in the same boat
Trapped, due to the fact we can't re-track or go back
But that
Is all part of lessons learned the hard way I guess
No time to think about it now shit I've got a test
I'm here with other prisoners
Passive listeners
Parishioners, and
Future nurse practitioners
I can't stand the
Professors purported purpose
To purposely propagate their propaganda
But its no prob to maintain the facade
While listening to them they're full of shit like sawdust or sod
After some learning I head off to one of my jobs
I keep a couple for a couple of reasons
The first to stay busy and the second to ensure I'm always eating
Needing a way out, a map, an escape route
It's all I think about
While doing pull ups in the yard push ups in my cell
My life's a living hell
But red finally gave me the rock hammer
That's 16 cm long the perfect tool to make my exit out of the slammer
I perfect my craft
And take a crack at these bars and burrow through this barricade
Told him I needed it to make my chess pieces
I only play with my celly
And he is
My mirror image you could call us twins but we aren't friends
I remember when I first met him
I was relaxing in my house and he was called in
Introduced myself and asked him what I should call him
He didn't say a word just looked at me while he was stalling
I repeated myself and he finally replied with Alden
He put his stuff on the other bunk then took a deep breath
I asked him if he played chess, he said yes
I was bored so I took out my board
And we started to play
As I move my pawn to pin his knight
We start talking about life
I asked about the places that hes been
And people that hes seen
He told me he had been imprisoned in prison since a teen
Other peoples plans didn't pan out for him
Drive and and ambition had started to run out for him
I look into his eyes and realize
He couldn't live a normal life if he tried
He's the very definition of institutionalized
The game ends I've won and hes off to bed
So with the mind frame of Andy Dufresne
I reach under the bed frame
And refrain from making noise
Poised to get to work
Fuck this has to work
I take the poster of memorial hall off of my wall
There's no time to stall
Knock out the last few pieces of the self doubt
And as they fall
I think back about all
Of the events that lead to this
The jobs I don't miss
And sitting in class being pissed
23 yrs 500 yards same shit
There's no reward without risk I finally found my route
So I'm out...
(the audio clip at the end is from the movie Shawshank Redemption)
