Close to the place where I-95 merges with Interstate 10
My family basks in the glow of a tree and stands in my grandmother’s den
I am not there, nor is my wife; we stayed in New York on our own
Considering our plans for the months up ahead, chiefest of which is this one:

We’re going back to the ocean, to the sky unencumbered, back to mosquitoes and rain
Florida, I have missed you in ways I don’t know how to explain
I’ve missed the pine trees in odd-numbered rows, thе strip malls that all look the same
I am a stranger in this high-class placе, I belong to a world less tame

Oh, the smell of sulfur never left my hair, the tap water here tastes too clean
Everywhere I walk the ground is covered with concrete, the trees are the wrong shade of green
So I’m going back to the subdivisions, condos, and trailers, back to the old neighborhood
Florida, I have dreamt of returning, I didn’t think that I would

I miss the ultra-right wing and their medieval agenda filling me with the holiest fire
I miss the elderly voters who undermine the natives in a place where they only decided to retire
Florida, you are an alligator crossing the street at your leisurely pace
The rest of the country wishes you would go away, but I’ve got you in the tightest embrace

So I’m going back to the colony of pirate descendants, back to the land of my youth
Florida, I acted like I was better than you, but you and I both know that that’s not the truth
I said, Florida, I acted like I was better than you, but you and I both know the truth
