The spaceship dodged space debris to do it. Channel 8's Stephen Newman watched it happen at Pioneer Space Control in California, and here's his report

The pictures we are getting back are good, but not as colorful as the ones from Jupiter earlier this year. The side's pioneer being built from an еarlier technology voyager, it boils down to a mattеr of sheer distance. There's a nine foot dish of billion miles of waste sending back data. The coded information in the signals was coming back and half the speed in from Jupiter. This was to make sure that it's received ungarbeled [?] distance. That was planned, but yesterday, signals had to be cut in half again, because of some problems at the Goldstone tracking station. This makes the pictures half as small, and also has the effect of putting a small telephoto lens on pioneer
