[Verse 1]
Dear gardener
I was wilted when you found me
Pathways of lesions lead my skin
Cracked and eroded from ages of calamitous seasons;
Echoes of storms still flooded my mind and the dry taste of drought still lived on my tongue
Dust lived in my eyes – the only oasis was found in my lungs
The tragic surprise, irony lost on these eyes
The cataract clouds with their moisture deprived, begging the world for reprieve –
I just want to breathe

[Chorus]
Ungibambelela ngobumnene
From pharaoh to fellah, akuhlukile
When her heart is fed up will she still be here?
In this rain together, in her arms forever?

[Verse 2]
When there’s fire on the mountain and no one is running
Can we assume that it’s their flame?
If her surface is blemished but her face is smiling
Do we presume to know her pain?
[Chorus]
Ungibambelela ngobumnene
From pharaoh to fellah, akuhlukile
When her heart is fed up will she still be here?
In this rain together, in her arms forever?

Ungibambelela ngobumnene. (Ungibambelela)
From pharaoh to fellah, akuhlukile. (Pharaoh)
When her heart is fed up will she still be here? (It’s fed up, it’s fed up it’s fed up)
In this rain together, in her arms forever? (Rain together)

[Poem - "gardens" by Tiya]
We are attached as we are separate. I will love you as long as you are present but I may blink out the tears that mourn your absence. Change me, for I cannot do it on my own. Teach me how to love and be loved so I can give you my raw, crumbling fears and trust that they’ll be safe in your hands. Hold firm but not tight, lest your protection turn destruction before this natural light. To give you everything back, I would deplete myself. How pale a poem compares to a novel, with one page so thin and simple, yet in collection holding hallways and hollows, caverns and concerts, rivers and gardens
Forever and always
