Oh town of five by seven squares all nestled in between
The mountains high on either side and the fields of brown and green
Well I don’t have strength for poetry or nicety I fear
So from my soul, I sing to you that you might lend an ear
That you might lend an ear

I am just a stranger here, nobody knows my face
I used to be a somebody but I wandered far from grace
I can’t ask more than sympathy and peaceful place to rest
For I have wandered many miles with a poison in my chest
With a poison in my chest

You think you know a thing or two 'bout how to get along
And yes, it is one thing or two you know that isn’t wrong
Well I’ve spent time with visionaries and charlatans the same
But it never was quite clear to me which finger was to blame
Which finger was to blame

My days are little neighborhoods where different people live
Never two to intertwine and not a damn to give
For anyone or anything outside of what they know
My days are little neighborhoods and in between I go
Oh town of five by seven squares all nestled in between
The mountains high on either side and the fields of brown and green
Well I don’t have strength for poetry or nicety I fear
But from my soul I sing to you that you might lend and ear
That you might lend an ear, that you might lend an ear
