[Intro]
Strange trees
Strange trees in the darkness
Yeah

[Verse]
Strange fruits
A fruit so strange, yet so familiar
Strange fruits come from strange trees
Planted in foreign soil
Uprooted from their forgotten homes of lusciousness and plenty
These trees struggle to bear fruit, but continue to do so
Painstakingly pushing their xylem and phloem toward their life-giving limbs
And there these fruits have hung, on those limbs, for over 400 years
See, many get harvested by old man Sam to sell for profit but
Many, many just drop
Drop right onto the hard cement from which they grow
These fruits are used to getting bruised and beaten
But they often do not survive
Strewn like trash, becoming food for the rats
These fruits never ripen but are harvested nonetheless
Leaving the sourest of tastes in the hungriest of mouths
Not that taste matters to those who feed on the trees that bear the strange fruit
Filled with greed planting seeds that bear the same truths they ignore time again
They stole the land that they till and the money they spend
Made from fruit of the trees, underwatered, undersunned
Never, ever understood
Still underfunded, undergunned
These beautiful fruits that grow on these trees are so sweet with a tang
But on these strange trees, they continue to hang
[Outro]
Strange trees
Strange trees in the darkness
