Catherine picks cattails on the walk
From the water by the dock
And tries to laugh it off
Threw away her petals to the war
On a dirty kitchen floor
And never asked what for

She can’t stop thinking ‘bout the things she’s never had
In the years before the shipyard she held fire in her hands
You’ll never see a stronger woman lying where she stands
She always lets the wind push her around
To pretend that her feet aren’t on the ground

The Widows walk the beach along the tide
For the sailors that have died
Praying that they’ll arrive
They keep a candle on the windowsill
In the cold December chill
Just whispering, “until”

They can’t stop thinking ‘bout the things they never had
The mouths so full of water but still crying for the land
The smiles shone so brightly, now ground down and full of sand
And the wind still finds its way around the door
In a voice you thought was gone forevermore
The Fisherman runs fingers through his net
He doesn’t mind the wet
He isn’t old just yet
He sings his song the boy at the bar
Whose hair is black as tar
He thinks he shimmers like a star

He can’t stop thinking ‘bout the things he’s never had
His lamplight flickers heavy as he walks along the strand
At night he beds with dogs and drunks and filth of fellow man
And listens to the walls that creak and moan
Until he falls asleep again alone

The Sea just bends and breathes and breaks again
Mistaken as a friend
Making love to the wind
It doesn’t pay no mind unto the rocks
Or people on the docks
Or the ticking of their clocks

But it can’t stop thinking ‘bout the things it’s never had
So many stones and bones that it could hold inside its hands
So many wandering souls that it could get to join the band
To scream and cry and steal the rocks from shore
And rise until we’re gone forevermore
