Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz in Germany is generally credited with having set up the first practical printing press using movable metal type. The printing press won rapid acceptance. The printing press had an immense impact on European civilization, enabling the rapid spread of new knowledge and ideas among the educated classes. During the Northern Renaissance, just as in Italy, humanist scholars studied and found inspiration in classical literature.
